I've recently discovered the potential my camera holds to start conversations with the people I pass in the street everyday. As my days and weeks in Vancouver are quickly coming to an end, I wanted to do a final series of street portraits that engaged people in a similar way: by asking them the same question. I soon realized how difficult it was to decide on just one question. I wanted something everyone could connect to - but was unsure of what that was. So. I decided to flip the concept on its head and ask people what they thought was an important question we as human beings need to ask ourselves. The results are displayed below. You'll find questions that are deeply thoughtful and introspective, as well as others that are light and humorous. I think each of them speak to some aspect of our being human.
I am incredibly grateful to each of the individuals below who took time out of their lunch hours, coffee breaks, and sun-filled afternoons in Vancouver to engage with me and kindly allow me to photograph them. These encounters have energized me, encouraged me, and given me an appreciation and greater curiosity for the stranger in my midst. It is my hope that as viewers you will take time to reflect on the questions posed here, making time for self-reflection, and to ask yourself what further questions are important for us to ponder as human beings.
